Gnomes are a curious and excitable race. They have a strong entrepreneurial drive and a talent for invention. Most gnomes find some skill or craft so consuming they often have trouble focusing on anything else in their lives, including their own safety. As such, gnomes tend to be accident prone, especially those with dangerous hobbies. Despite their individual, and often obsessive, pursuits they have a strong sense of community, valuing collaboration and teamwork over individual accomplishment. For gnomes, seeing an idea or goal become reality is often more important than receiving the fame for it.
Gnomes are short standing about 3 and half feet tall. Males typically favor short hair and close trimmed beards while females tend more towards shoulder length hair with interesting accessories or complicated buns and braids. Both genders tend to favor simple clothing with plentiful pockets which are usually filled with an odd variety of tools and knickknacks. Intelligent but careless gnomes have developed sturdy bodies to survive their own recklessness and are tougher than their small size would imply.
Gnome society tends to be very community oriented and open minded. Quick to accept change and encourage new ideas, the eccentricity and recklessness typical of gnomes is well received in their society and often celebrated. Outsiders are quick to observe that gnome society couldn’t have developed in a more conservative way without their own natures tearing them apart. Innovation is praised, and when a new idea or project is proposed, it is common for many gnomes in similar (or completely unrelated) fields to join the project team in the hopes of adding their own personal flair or improvement to the plan. Gnomes have a deep love for magic, especially the school of illusion, as it a perfect tool for the gnomes’ quick wits and endless imagination.
Other races find gnome personalities to be larger than their stature and more than a little overwhelming. In conversation, gnomes tend to relate everything to their hobbies or interests or those of their closest friends and family. Once allowed to steer a conversation in that direction, it is almost impossible to derail their enthusiasm as they explain their most recent project or brilliant innovation. This overwhelming energy is exacerbated further by their love of pranks and practical jokes, combined with their general disregard for safety; it has turned many seemingly harmless antics into dangerous situations. Despite their quirks, most races get along quite well with gnomes as their generosity and open minded acceptance easily disarms most people’s frustrations. Ultimately anyone with a true passion for something in life can find true friends and a welcoming home among gnomes. This has caused an abundance of wanderers to settle in gnome lands resulting in most gnome kingdoms having a great racial diversity.
Alignment and Religion
Gnomes tend to be unpredictable and innovative but generous and accepting. As such they tend to be chaotic good. Religion usually takes a more subdued role in Gnome society due to their intense focus on other things more than any rejection of divine presence. Dest and Palus tend to be the most popular deities in gnome society but as in most aspects of gnomish life exceptions are common.
A gnome’s dogged pursuit of their interest can often lead them down some strange and less traveled roads. As such the adventuring life suits them quite well. Most gnomes take up adventuring to acquire inspiration and experience, though some do it to acquire wealth in order to fund their next big idea.
