Hugo Grob was still in custody after being charged with the sale of faulty wares to both the city guard and the general populace.
The party had spent the majority of the first day visiting other smiths in Leafway and had already concluded that Gaylia was not responsible given her focus on crafting bladed weapons and her apparent affections for Hugo. They had similarly dismissed Duncan Tallhammer as the culprit due to his seeming lack of interest in Hugo and his general surprise regarding the charges that had been leveled against the smith. The only blacksmith they had not spoken to was Fleck though Barnibus had gone into Fleck’s smithy “The Sword Arm” and spoken with his apprentice Owen. Owen appeared mistreated and was quick to admit that Fleck was unkind and held only negative feelings for Hugo and just about everyone else, but had no evidence regarding the case.
We picked up later that same day and the party decided to go to The Sword Arm together and see what they could learn of Fleck. Fleck’s hatred for Hugo as well as Mephisto got them thrown out quickly and without learning much about Fleck other than his great dislike of Hugo and lack of surprise about the allegations against him.
With no other leads the party rented some horses and set off to the site of a gnoll attack they were told about by the caravan guard Godo Trenton. They were attacked by a similar band of gnolls and after defeating them recovered the broken earthbreaker with Hugo’s maker’s mark that Godo had purchased from a merchant in town. Barnibus explained to the party that no follower of Palus would build such a weapon as it is the sacred weapon of Palus’ twin sister and hated rival Nalara.
After escorting a merchant wagon back into town the party used a clever disguise trick with the help of Mephisto’s father to find Owen. After seeing Owen’s bruises, obviously a result of Fleck’s beatings, they decided to take the child home with them and give him a proper meal.
Thomas Lennald showed off his training gauntlet and the party tried it out with varying degrees of success.
The next day Owen told the party that if Fleck was hiding anything it would be in his safe. Later that same morning the party broke into The Sword Arm while Fleck was away and opened his safe and found a makers mark that was a nearly identical copy of Hugo’s.
With all the evidence the party had found the trial was quick and Hugo was found innocent while Fleck would stand trial for selling faulty arms and framing Hugo.
Hugo agreed to take Owen as his apprentice with the party’s recommendation and promised to reward them for helping clear his name.
